Rameshwaram

The southernmost Jyotirlinga on Pamban Island — established by Rama himself after his victory over Lanka.

Overview

Where Rama Worshipped Shiva

Rameshwaram (also Rameswaram) holds a unique distinction among the twelve Jyotirlingas — it is the only one directly associated with Lord Rama, an avatar of Vishnu. According to the Ramayana, after his victory over Ravana and the rescue of Sita, Rama wished to atone for the sin of killing Ravana (a Brahmin). His spiritual advisors recommended that he establish a Shivalinga and worship Shiva here at the southern tip of India.

The temple is located on Pamban Island (also called Rameswaram Island), connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. It is one of the four Char Dham sites (the original circuit, alongside Badrinath, Dwarka and Puri), making it one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations on the subcontinent. The Ramanathaswamy Temple houses the longest temple corridor in the world — stretching 1,212 metres.

Rameshwaram history

The current temple structure primarily dates to the Nayaka period (16th–18th centuries CE), with significant contributions from the Setupati rulers of Ramanathapuram. The magnificent outer gopurams (gateway towers) and the world-record corridor were built in stages over several centuries by different royal dynasties. The Sethupati rulers — who bore the title "Guardian of the Bridge" (Adam's Bridge / Rama Setu) — were the chief patrons.

The temple contains 22 theerthams (sacred water tanks) and the central pilgrimage ritual involves bathing in all 22 in sequence, each believed to grant specific spiritual benefits. The Agni Theertham on the seashore is the first and most important. The central shrine houses two lingas — Ramalingam (established by Rama) and Viswalingam (brought by Hanuman from Kashi at Sita's request).

Rameshwaram is geographically at the end of the Indian subcontinent, facing Sri Lanka across the Palk Strait. The Pamban Rail Bridge (opened 1914) connecting the island to mainland India was an engineering marvel of its era. The bridge was featured in the first Indian postage stamp and remains an iconic symbol of the region. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, was born on Rameswaram Island.
