The 12 self-manifested sacred Shiva temples — supreme pilgrimage sites for devotees of Lord Shiva across India.
The Jyotirlingas are twelve revered shrines where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a “Jyotirlinga” — a pillar of light or column of fire. According to the Shiva Purana, these are the places where Shiva himself appeared as an infinite pillar of light to resolve a cosmic dispute between Brahma and Vishnu.
A pilgrimage to all twelve Jyotirlingas — known as the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Yatra — is considered one of the most meritorious acts in Hindu tradition, said to wash away the sins of past births and grant liberation.
